Sheffield DocFest is the UK’s leading documentary festival and one of the world’s most influential markets for documentary projects. They champion and present the breadth of documentary form – film, television, immersive and art – in Sheffield each June.
The Alternate Realities exhibition showcases innovative non-fiction and immersive documentary in all forms. The programme is a chance to explore boundaries of technology and storytelling to find new ways to engage with audiences, giving us an opportunity to explore our diverse lives, past and present, in innovative ways.
This year’s Alternate Realities programme contains 15 unique projects, all showcased at Site, and encompasses exciting new work exploring the use technologies such as of AI (artificial intelligence), VR (virtual reality) and immersive dome screens.
The exhibition is free, and no booking is required. All works from the Alternate Realities programme are included, except Within Touching Distance which requires a separate ticket, and is held in Studio I.
This year’s Alternate Realities exhibition includes a five-part VR series with acclaimed filmmakers Abel Ferrara, Tsai Ming-Liang, Catherine Hardwicke, Lee Myung-Se and Naomi Kawase

The Alternate Realities exhibition will run throughout Sheffield DocFest, from 14 – 19 June, and will continue at Site for an extended period until 16 July.
