Gargantua Extended – Listening Session with Theresa Bruno

You are invited to attend a special listening session at the installation of Theresa Bruno’s Garguantua, part of Platform 22.
The sound piece as part of the installation is made out of thousands of excerpts of text from the catalogue, read out loud by text-to-speech generators instead of voice actors. Theresa Bruno has collaborated with musician and artist Rian Treanor to create a bespoke piece of software which allows her to create random arrangements of these sound clips, resulting in a 30 minute concerto. The piece varies in legibility and intensity, and due to the nature of the arrangement software, you never hear the same piece twice.
We will listen to the sound piece together as part of the listening session, and in the second half of the session will experiment with the sound software to create a brand new composition for Gargantua.
After you book your place, we will send you a short script which includes a selection of text extracts used in the piece. We would greatly appreciate it if you could submit a recording of your own voice reading from the script, and then we will prepare this into clips and input them into the software. This is optional – you are welcome to attend and take part in the event without sending a recording.

There will be cushions, mats and chairs in the space, but please dress warmly as the space has the potential to become chilly on colder days.
Please note that the event will take place at Yorkshire Artspace Persistence Works Gallery, which is in the building directly next door to Site Gallery.
Platform
This event is part of Platform, an established artistic development programme at Site Gallery which allows artists to explore new ideas in a public space, testing new thinking and research with engaged audiences. The artists began their residencies in January 2022 and are five of twenty from the Sheffield City Region, taking part in the Freelands Artist Programme.
The Freelands Artist Programme supports emerging artists across the UK in partnership with g39, Cardiff, PS2, Belfast and Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh. Each artist receives a two-year paid residency which includes investment in professional development, production as well as opportunities to exhibit.
